Listening to Real Experiences of Motherhood

To better understand the emotional needs during pregnancy and postpartum, I spoke with a small group of women and caregivers — including first-time moms, second-time moms, and close family supporters.

These conversations highlighted a shared pattern: while physical care was often discussed, emotional well-being was rarely addressed. Most described feeling unseen, especially in the quieter, everyday moments of motherhood.

🧘‍♀️

Emotional support is often missing

Moms shared that they rarely had a space to reflect on how they were feeling; most attention was on the baby or clinical checklists.

🤝

Caregivers want to help, but don’t always know how

Partners and family members often wanted to be involved but weren’t sure how to support beyond basic tasks.

🌿

Every journey is different

First-time moms craved reassurance. Second-time moms wanted more calm and balance. A single app experience couldn’t fit everyone equally.

📱

Overwhelming UIs increase mental load

Many described other apps as cluttered, medical, or “too much.” They wanted something simpler, warmer, and emotionally attuned.

Where others fall short

Reviewing existing pregnancy and wellness apps revealed a consistent gap: emotional intelligence was missing from the market.

Most pregnancy apps focus on milestones, not emotional support.
Wellness apps feel calm, but not specific to pregnancy or postpartum needs.
Community apps offer connection, but can feel cluttered and overwhelming.
Caregiver support is usually missing or treated as secondary.

Annotation: these apps track milestones well, but emotional support still feels secondary.

Four core pillars

After listening to real stories from moms and caregivers, the solution responds directly to their emotional needs — a gentle, AI-powered companion focused on support beyond just data.

🌸
Emotional Presence
A character-led companion who holds space without judgment. Warm, non-clinical, always there — even during the quiet, overwhelming moments.
🎙️
Voice-First Interaction
Journal and interact through voice when typing feels like too much. Hands-free design for moments when your hands are already full.
🔮
Personalized Intelligence
AI that adapts to your stage, mood history, and focus areas — delivering insights that feel made for you, not templated for everyone.
👨‍👩‍👧
Caregiver Inclusion
Partners and family get their own mode — light updates and daily suggestions on how to best support the mom, making care a shared journey.

Challenge: Making AI Feel Human

A major challenge was designing an AI experience that felt emotionally relatable, not just functional.

Early versions of the app felt too robotic and lacked warmth.

After exploring different flows and designs, I realized the solution was to introduce a character.

Creating Numa as a friendly, expressive guide helped transform the experience into something more personal and emotionally supportive — something users could actually connect with.

Visuals that feel soft, safe, and supportive

Built from the actual Numa system

The design system uses the source image board with character expressions, typography, logo treatment, buttons, icons, and color palette. This keeps the joined HTML visually consistent with your original PDF.
